The 16th Annual Texas Shootout 12U Divisions are themed after the Variety Hall Shootout. The Variety Hall Shootout, also known as the Las Vegas Saloon Shootout, occurred on January 22, 1880. Four rough-housing cowboys by the names of T.J. House, James West, John Dorsey, and William Randall were parading about town sneering, laughing, and looking for trouble. Word soon reached Marshal Joe Carson, who, along with Deputy “Mysterious” Dave Mather, found the men at Close and Patterson’s Variety Hall. When Carson demanded that the four men “check” their guns, they refused and a wild gunfight ensued.

The 16th Annual Texas Shootout 16U Divisions are themed after the shootout that occurred on July 21, 1865 in the town square of Springfield, Missouri between Wild Bill Hickok and gambler Davis Tutt. It is one of the few recorded instances in the Old West of a one-on-one quick-draw duel in a public place, in the manner later made iconic by countless novels, dramas, and films and was detailed in an article in Harper's Magazine in 1867, making Hickok a household name and folk hero.

The famed Long Branch Saloon Shootout occurred on April 5, 1879 in the small town of Dodge City, Kansas as a result of an ongoing quarrel between Levi Richardson, a buffalo hunter, and Frank Loving, a professional gambler. As the two men sat across from each other during a game of poker, they could be heard talking low to one another when suddenly Richardson loudly challenged Loving, who calmly replied...“Try me and see”.
